For over 25 years, Sisal Rugs has been providing consumers premium made to order natural fiber rugs. Whether you’re looking for a custom size, border, or shape, they fabricate to your exact wishes.
The Challenge
The most valuable part of Sisal Rug’s business is two fold – product and ease of ordering. Without a physical storefront and over 85% orders through the website, mastering a rug customizer for both desktop and mobile was crucial in delivering a quality user experience.
UX Considerations
- Most rugs are neutral colored. This means that the fabric type, feel, and attributes are most important in the buying process. It is important that users can see the fabric and weave with highly detailed imagery.
- The original navigation was led by product names such as Brasilia Sisal that were confusing to first time shoppers. It was important to provide a navigation that better guided consumers to the rug attributes and the appearance they were looking for.
- Site Search was used only 1-2% of the time on the original site, helping solidify users needed guidance on which natural fiber rug best suited their needs. Leading with marketing product names only created confusion.
An essential rug guide
To create a visual experience that connected the user to the product they were customizing, we knew we need to update product imagery in real time. We also knew that having the product image along with all the customizable options in one view without scrolling would help the user track their selections.

All of the same challenges we faced on desktop were amplified on mobile. Less screen space equals more room for error. To maintain product imagery for customers, each customization sends the user to an offcanvas window that pulls in updated product imagery to help visualize your choices.

We created a clean multi-step checkout process where products are carried throughout every step and the ability to add coupons are at the forefront.
